What is an online memorial?
An online memorial is a unique and special way of remembering the life of a loved one. It’s a way of capturing key aspects about that person’s life – something which a gravestone is unable to do. It also allows people wherever they live, and whatever time it is, to access the information. This is often a helpful part of the grieving process for individuals, particularly at times after the memorial service has occurred – these individuals can view the memorial when they may be feeling low, and be uplifted by the memories shared at this site. How do I create a memorial?
It is very easy to create a memorial:Firstly, you have to register with the site. This just involves leaving your name, e-mail address and allows you to choose a password. This will then mean that you can save or edit the memorial you are creating, and allows us to contact you should there be a problem with the memorial.
Secondly, you then need to input some details about the deceased person. Some of this information is mandatory (such as the person’s name, date of death), but much is optional (such as children’s names, hobbies). There is a box in which you can enter a few paragraphs about the individual. Some people choose to use the words that are spoken at the funeral service itself.
Thirdly, you can upload up to 3 photos on the website, perhaps depicting different ages of your loved one. Alternatively, you can choose one of the pre-stored images.
Fourthly, you can choose to enter the funeral details, together with a link to an electronic map. Some people find this a useful way of communicating the details at a potentially distressing time. Note that you only need to fill in the basic information about the deceased individual before completing the funeral details – you can then come back to the website at a later date, perhaps after the funeral service, to complete the additional information.
What if other people want to add their memories?
Once a memorial has been created for an individual, other people can easily add their own memories of the individual. When a memorial has been created, a “Guest Book” is generated. This is a space where other relatives and friends can add their own personal tributes. Can I change my memorial at a later date?
Yes. When you create a memorial, you will choose a password. By using your login details and password, you will be able to edit the memorial yourself at any time. How much will it cost me?
Creating a memorial is free, and there are also no charges for uploading photos or making entries into the guestbook. In addition, when a memorial is created, RememberLife will donate 20p to Tearfund. How long will the memorial last?
The memorial is guaranteed to remain for at least 2 years. RememberLife will, though, endeavour to hold the memorials for as long as the Internet is available. Will my e-mail be visible to anyone?
No. The memorial will show who created the initial entry, but no e-mail address will be shown. If anyone wants to get in touch with you directly, they will be able to e-mail the website, which will then automatically forward the message to you, maintaining your privacy. Entries made into the guestbook will also show names only, not e-mail accounts. How does Tearfund benefit from the memorial I create?
For every memorial that is created, RememberLife will donate 20p to Tearfund, a registered charity no.265464. This charity has been chosen because one of their aims is to bring life to people that live in poverty and despair. By creating an on-line memorial for people that have sadly departed, our hope is that these individuals will not be forgotten and some form of comfort is found for their friends and relations. By donating to Tearfund, we wish to prevent death and sorrow in other parts of the world. That is why our vision isYou can find out more about the work of Tearfund
